Standard Garage Doors Vs Custom Garage Doors
By Jim Hatley, March 21, 2023
Have you ever wondered about standard versus custom garage doors? We work with both types at Tri-Lakes Garage Doors every day, as we install standard doors for customers and design, manufacture, and install custom doors based on client specifications. We discuss in more detail the difference between the two types below.
What Is A Standard Garage Door?
Where would the average person go when they look for standard garage doors? They might start their research at Home Depot which states that for most homes, the standard single-car garage door is 8 to 9 feet wide and 7 to 8 feet high, with new construction often offering 9 x 7 garage doors. A standard garage door is thus the average mass-manufactured door available in the market. It is built for single and double-car garages but is limited to a number of styles, features, and sizes.
Standard Garage Door Sizes
Standard garage door sizes generally correspond to the typical dimensions of garages and their openings. Single-car and double-car garages each have their own common size ranges, with some variation in width and height. While triple-car garage doors are less common, they too often follow established sizing guidelines.
Single-Car Garage Door
A single-car garage door is ideal for homes with one vehicle and limited garage space.
- Size: 8×9 feet or 7×8 feet
Double-Car Garage Door
A double-car garage door provides ample space for two vehicles and is commonly found in suburban homes.
- Size: 16–18 feet wide by 7–9 feet tall
Triple-Car Garage Door
Triple-car garage doors are designed for families with multiple vehicles or larger garages and can be configured as one large or three smaller doors.
- Size: 20–32 feet wide
RV Garage Door
An RV garage door is built taller and wider to accommodate motorhomes, trailers, or other oversized vehicles.
- Size: 10–12 feet wide by 10–14 feet tall
What Is A Custom Garage Door?
We have been building custom garage doors for more than twenty years at Tri-Lakes Garage Doors and specialize in garage doors for homes and businesses. What is a custom garage door? It is our client’s ideas that come to life. A one-of-a-kind item uniquely created for their house and designed to meet the homeowner’s wishes regarding style, features, materials, color, size, hardware, and opener systems. We are happy to make recommendations and have many examples, but ultimately, we want our clients to be happy with their custom garage doors.
The standard types of materials used include steel, wood, aluminum, and fiberglass, but there are many options. If a client has something specific in mind for their custom doors, we will try to accommodate their requests.
H3: Types Of Custom Garage Doors
What types of custom garage doors do we create at Tri-Lakes Garage Doors?

An increasing number of individuals and families living an active lifestyle own a motorhome or a towable. People often build bespoke garages that require RV garage doors. We design these with durability and aesthetics in mind, ensuring both function and form are met.
Glass Garage Doors
We manufacture glass garage doors that open up into back patios or outdoor living spaces. These doors are ideal for boosting curb appeal and adding modern aesthetics to your home’s design.

We create insulated basement garage doors that fit the exact size and specifications of almost any basement. Built for durability and visual appeal, these doors support energy efficiency and smart home improvement goals.
Which Garage Door Should You Choose?
Choosing a garage door depends on why you want a new one. Are you selling the house and need a new garage door because the old one was too damaged, and it could affect the sales price? Or do you want to enhance your current property with a bespoke garage door? Here are some factors that might influence your decision.
- Materials. If you have a special piece of wood you would like to incorporate into the garage door, you need a custom product.
- Design. When the architectural style of your home is unique, and you want a garage door that blends in, a custom-manufactured door is the best option.
- Cost and Time. When you are in a hurry to replace the garage door and have a limited budget, buy standard garage doors.
